The Klondike

Here you will find the insider’s guide to the Klondike Trail of ’98 International Road Relay.

The Relay Race typically takes place on the second Friday of September in Skagway, Alaska and finishes Saturday in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The race starts in waves based upon estimated finishing times. Start times are assigned at the captain’s meeting.

Klondike Start Times: 6:00pm AST/ 7:00pm PST
Wave 1 Starts at 6:00pm AST/ 7:00pm PST with additional starts following every 15 minutes with the final wave starting at 11pm AST/ 12:00am PST

 

Getting to Skagway

 

Via the Road System
  • Skagway  unlike most Southeast Alaskan Towns is on the Road System, getting to Skagway from a location on the road system is easy just plan for the inevitable road construction and be sure to bring you passports as  there are multiple border crossings.

Things to do in Skagway: Be a tourist/ last minute Klondike Preparations.

Alaska Liquor Store, 2nd and Broadway Conveniently close to the start line at 2nd and Broadway. Booze is expensive and Canada if you’re planning on post-race libations buy booze in Skagway if you didn’t buy it in Juneau, or Anchorage.
Duff’s Backcountry Outfitters, 351 5th Street Headlamps, Cliffblocks/Energy Gels, and end of the season sale on outdoors gear – they even stock running shoes.
The Mountain Shop, between Broadway and State Street on 4th Ave For everything you didn’t find at Duff’s.

 

Tourist Stuff
Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park Museum and interpretive center presenting and preserving the history of the the Klondike Gold Rush.
Kone company, 499 Broadway. Best Fudge and candy shop in Skagway.
Dyea This ghost town and campground is home the Chilkoot Trail and is a short drive from Skagway.
Shopping Take a walk down the main drag from t-shirt shops to Jewelry stores Skagway has enough touristy kitsch satisfy your inner hoarder.
Hiking/Trail Running Lower and Upper Dewy Lake Trails, Smugglers Cove, and Yakutania Point.

Coffee break in Carcross!

Caribou Crossing Coffee The Yukon’s most famous coffee roaster keeps their doors open and coffee hot for the duration of the race.

Things to do in Whitehorse

City of Whitehorse Canada Games Centre This athletics center is a must see. Indoor swimming pool, water park, ice rink, track, turf field, and fitness center it’ll have you questioning what we’re doing wrong in Juneau.
Hiking/trail running Check out the Whitehorse trail guided for more information on area trails.
Takhini Hotsprings Hotsprings!! There are cabins, a campground and spa perfect for post Klondike recovery.
Yukon Brewing Company Craft Brewery with a number of beer options to try. Brewery tour starts at 2pm Monday through Saturday.
